Participate in a General Session
Ten of our American Oblates are being invited by the Camaldolese Order to participate in the first phase, the “General Session,” of our “Consulta,” next year in our Motherhouse of Camaldoli, in Tuscany, Italy. The dates of the General Session are September 30 eve to October 3, with arrival September 30. We cannot, alas, pay for transportation, and Camaldoli would need to receive a donation for room and board, but it would be most reasonable. The Consulta occurs in between General Chapters of the Order, is a kind of mini-Chapter, with a “Canonical Session” for only Priors, ex officio members and delegates, following the open “General Session.” But they will also be at the first “General Session” coming from our main hermitages and monasteries in Italy, America, India, Brazil, and Tanzania. At the first “General Session” Sr. Ishprya of India (not a Camaldolese, was a good friend of Fr. Bede Griffiths) will be offering conferences, as well as an Italian theologian. In attendance will also be Abbesses and Prioresses of some of our Camaldolese convents, along with some of their nuns and other monks. The “General Session” thus offers a wonderful opportunity to understand in a deeper way our Order today, its spirituality and commitments, as well as to meet so many Camaldolese and other Oblates (also 5 from Australia), stay at our Motherhouse, etc.
If you are interested in participating, please contact one of us below. Thanks so much.

2008 Pilgrimage
Fr. Cyprian Consiglio together with Bishop Sylvester Ryan of Monterey are leading a Pilgrimage to Italy next June, with the theme "Universal Call to Contemplation and the Arts." It will include a visit to Camaldoli, a longer stay at Assisi, Bologna, Florence, etc.
The main group will be the splendid 62 member Monterey Diocesan Choir, which will sing Masses and concerts in basilica, cathedral and church settings in Italy.
There is space for 20 more Pilgrims. Anyone interested please contact Sr. Barbara Ann Long, OP, Director of the Office of Divine Worship, Diocese of Monterey, at Bitmus@aol.com.
Our Fr. Bruno Barnhart's new book is in print, in hardbound and also paperback, and about to become available, entitled The Future of Wisdom: Toward a Rebirth of Sapiential Christianity (N.Y.: Continuum, 2007). It has received glowing reviews from Prof. Ewert Cousins, author Beatrice Bruteau, etc. It can be preordered on Amazon.com, etc.
Dear Oblate Friends,
Some wonderful news: our Camaldolese Office Book has been printed and the many boxes have now safely arrived at the Hermitage. We are offering the handsome volume at the non-profit price of $20, plus $5 mailing. If you are interested, just email bede@contemplation.com with your full address, and a Visa or Master Card number plus expiration date (as "04/09"). Or mail a check for $25 made out to "New Camaldoli Hermitage", and include your full address. Write "Office Book" on the envelope, and address it to:
New Camaldoli Hermitage
62475 Coast Highway One
Big Sur, CA 93920
This volume represents the first "event" of our Hermitage 50th Anniversary celebrations! We were founded in 1958, so this is an early, kind of vigil offering!
Further details about the book: it has been printed for us by Liturgical Press, is a handsome, strongly bound hard cover volume, and its official title is: Lauds and Vespers, Including Compline and Additional Acclamations. The covers are a rich burgandy color, with our logo inset on the cover. The book features three lovely colored ribbons! It includes a helpful Introduction by our Thomas Matus and Cyprian Consiglio. The text verses and music are easily legible, and the book is a comfortable size, 6 x 9 inches. We hope it can enrich your prayer life and bind you the closer to us at New Camaldoli and Incarnation Monastery--and also the Episcopal Mt. Calvary Retreat House, which has ordered 100 copies! It includes a hymn to Fr. James Otis Sargent Huntington, O.H.C.! If you can make it to the Hermitage here, or Incarnation Monastery in Berkeley, or Mt. Calvary in Santa Barbara, of course you will be able to buy the volume for just $20, saving the cost of mailing.
A special thanks to our Thomas and Cyprian and Bede and our former Peter Damian for their very hard work making this volume possible, and to Oblate volunteers, especially of our San Luis Obispo community, for helping with the Saturday mailings. Since we shall only be mailing once a week, please do not expect immediate delivery. Patience is a splendid Benedictine/Camaldolese virtue!
Cantebury in 2008
We want to let you know early on that a Benedictine Experience at Canterbury Cathedral is being planned for June 18-24, 2008. Of course that sacred, awesome Cathedral setting is particularly adapted to exploring Benedictine spirituality for all--that is also where the first Benedictine Experience took place in the summer of 1982. If you would like further information (or would want to sign up!) just email Elizabeth H. Swenson, Executive Director, at SaintBenedict@prospect-tech.com.

ISBN: 087243270X
ISBN13: 9780872432703

From the Foreword: “What a unique and sacred school of learning … Since, as Bede Griffiths insists, God’s call to contemplation is universal, everyone should find practical and profound guidance in these pages.” – Sister Pascaline Coff, OSB Osage Monastery, Sand Springs, OK
A spiritual journey with Meath Conlan: From the Australian wilderness to the tropical landscape of South India, Meath Conlan traces his spiritual journey with the late spiritual master Bede Griffiths. He shares with us a fascinating and intimate portrait of this humble and holy man, who was not only a mentor but friend and confidante. Father Bede’s conversation and wisdom come to life through Conlan’s recollections and vivid pictures which chronicle their years of friendship. The twenty-eight full-colour photographs from the author’s private collection include public celebrations, interfaith meetings with world religious leaders, as well as private moments of contemplation and worship.
